Let’s not take the law into our own hands – Central Regional Minister appeals after New Winneba attack

Central Regional Minister, Ekow Panyin Okyere Eduamoah, has called on the people of New Winneba and surrounding areas to remain peaceful and not resort to vigilantism following a violent incident that resulted in three deaths and about 15 serious injuries. The minister saw the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital to meet with victims and evaluate the security situation in the region.

In an interview, Mr Eduamoah stated that authorities have yet to pinpoint any particular group responsible for the violence, urging everyone involved to allow the police to conclude their investigation. He emphasized the importance of allowing grievances to be heard and ensuring coexistence in the community.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tettey has deployed more police personnel, including two armored vehicles, to bolster security and deter additional violence. The minister, who also chairs the Regional Security Council, expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and injuries. Three people were confirmed dead, and around 20 were severely wounded; however, as of morning, twelve had been discharged, and eight remained for further medical checks.

The minister extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured residents that steps would be taken to restore and maintain peace in the community. The New Winneba violence is suspected to be connected to a land dispute, with residents reporting increased tensions and attacks in certain parts of the area. So far, six suspects have been arrested in relation to the incident, and more police officers have been sent to the region as the investigation continues.
