Lawmaker urges Hong Kong gov’t to introduce comprehensive population policy amid record-low births

A pro-Beijing Hong Kong lawmaker, Nixie Lam from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB), has called for the government to establish a comprehensive population policy and investigate young people's perspectives on childbearing. Over the past year, the territory recorded fewer than 30,000 births, marking the lowest number of baby births in Hong Kong.

Despite the introduction of measures to increase fertility, such as a one-off tax allowance for assisted reproductive services and the "Newborn Baby Bonus" scheme, Lam claims the government lacks a cohesive population policy. She emphasized the necessity of conducting research into young people's attitudes towards starting families and raising children, stating that existing policies are outdated and ineffective without thorough research.
