The Strait of Hormuz was the site of two Iranian tankers being damaged by explosive mines, according to Iranian sources. The incidents reportedly forced the ship crews to abandon their vessels, stating that "punitive measures" were planned for shipping companies using "illegal routes." The events could not initially be independently verified.

The Strait of Hormuz has remained a central point of contention between Washington and Tehran throughout the war. Iran has continued to block shipping through the strategic waterway through threats and attacks on vessels, while the US military has repeatedly successfully escorted ships along the coast of Oman. Israel's army has also continued to strike Hezbollah targets in neighboring Lebanon, with the Iranian-supported militia launching drone attacks against Israeli soldiers near Ali al-Taher in southern Lebanon the previous night.

In response, Israeli military sources reported targeting Hezbollah facilities where plans to attack Israeli civilians and soldiers were being coordinated in the nearby town of Nabatija. Iran has reported seven more fatalities, while the state news agency Irna cited the province's vice governor as saying eight people were injured in the Chusestan industrial province after rocket attacks on the cities of Ahwas and Aghadschari.

Prior to these attacks, Iranian media had already reported four deaths during a wedding celebration in Hormuzgan in the southeastern Hormuz province. US President Donald Trump referred to the "large and violent" military actions as retaliation for Iran's failed attempt to smuggle mines through the Strait of Hormuz, as well as in response to recent Iranian rocket attacks on military bases in Jordan, which were successfully repelled.

The US military itself cited Iranian attacks on merchant ships in the vital Strait of Hormuz as another reason for the actions.
