Hong Kong democracy activist Wong pleads guilty to foreign collusion

Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong has pleaded guilty to foreign collusion in a second national security trial, which could result in a life sentence, according to AFP journalists in court. The 29-year-old, known for his role in the now-disbanded democracy movement, is accused of asking foreign entities to impose sanctions or engage in hostile activities against Hong Kong and China in 2020, following the introduction of a national security law by Beijing.

Wong, who is currently serving a nearly five-year sentence for subversion, was due to be released the following year. Rights groups fear the new charges could see him imprisoned for life. During the trial, Wong confirmed his guilty plea and smiled when a supporter shouted "hang in there!" Prosecutors allege that Wong and other activists had sought support from abroad through social media to raise awareness and call for international sanctions against China and Hong Kong after the national security law took effect.

Wong has expressed gratitude and stated that he will continue to strive for knowledge and personal growth.
