Ghana Water produces 219 million gallons daily against a 350 million-gallon demand – GWL CEO

Ghana Water Limited (GWL) currently generates around 219 million gallons of water each day, falling short of the estimated daily demand of 350 million gallons by a significant margin of 131 million gallons, according to the company's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Adam Mutawakilu. Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show on September 2, Mr. Mutawakilu highlighted that GWL's production level is substantially lower than the country's daily water requirements.

During a discussion on "Is Ghana's water quality and access under threat?", he revealed that the company currently produces approximately 62.6 percent of Ghana's daily water need, resulting in a shortfall of about 37.4 percent. The supply problem is exacerbated by non-revenue water, which includes water lost due to aging and damaged infrastructure, as well as unauthorized connections.

The company's non-revenue water rate stands at 47.6 percent as of June 2026, having decreased from 52.2 percent in December 2024 and 51.6 percent in December 2025. To improve its water supply and revenue collection, GWL is actively replacing aging pipelines and intensifying efforts to curb illegal connections.
