Ghana Water Limited's Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, has revealed that the company loses nearly half of its daily water production to theft and leakages. Speaking on Joy FM's Super Morning Show, Mr Mutawakilu stated that the company generates around 219 million gallons of water daily, but the national demand is 350 million gallons.
The company's non-revenue water rate, which measures water produced but unbilled, was 47.6% in June 2026, a slight improvement from 52.2% in December 2024 and 51.6% in December 2025. Illegal consumption accounts for approximately 78% of the unaccounted water, while physical leakages make up the remaining 22%. Mr Mutawakilu attributed the leakages to aging and weakened pipelines, some dating back to the 1960s.
