Ghana Water must adopt advanced metering technology to track consumption – PURC

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has urged Ghana Water Limited to implement advanced metering technology to accurately monitor water usage and decrease its significant non-revenue water levels. Dr Shafic Suleman, the PURC's Executive Secretary, stated that upgrading Ghana Water’s metering system would enable the company to accurately track water supplied to consumers, enhance revenue collection, and tackle water theft.

During a segment on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on September 2, Dr Suleman emphasized the importance of remetering non-metered areas and improving the existing metering technology. He explained that these changes would allow Ghana Water to account for all the water consumed by its customers. Currently, Ghana Water's non-revenue water rate is at 47.6 percent, surpassing the PURC’s 45 percent threshold under its Multi-Year Tariff Order.

Non-revenue water includes water lost due to leaks, illegal connections, theft, defective meters, and billing issues. The PURC is also keeping an eye on Ghana Water’s investments in transmission pipelines and distribution networks to ensure a reduction in physical leakages and commercial losses.
