Gateway attacks on The Vibes servers are an attack on all Malaysians

The recent series of server attacks targeting Malaysian news portal The Vibes represents a significant threat to press freedom and the broader democratic framework of the nation. These attacks, which include denial-of-service (DoS/DDoS-style) operations, are not merely technical inconveniences but deliberate efforts to censor reporting and analysis of current affairs.

By repeatedly overwhelming the site with illegitimate traffic and requests, the attackers disrupt access to vital information, undermining the "Fourth Estate" responsible for safeguarding transparency, accountability, and democratic discourse.

The Vibes, founded by Datuk Vinod Sekhar in 2020, has emerged as one of the few independent portals consistently targeted by these malicious actors. Despite facing denial-of-service attacks in June and November 2025, the site has demonstrated resilience by reinforcing its cyber-defences. However, the latest attack on September 2, 2026, which left both The Vibes.com and Getaran.my offline for several hours, underscores the persistent nature of these threats.

These attacks aim to diminish or disrupt independent news coverage, thereby limiting the information available to Malaysian citizens. Such actions weaken the democratic checks and balances crucial for accountability and transparency. The Vibes firmly rejects any form of intimidation and reaffirms its commitment to independence, rejecting any association with political parties or government funding.
