Chief Justice praises MIIF, other SOEs, questions what Ghana was doing in past 8 years

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie paid tribute to the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and other state entities under the current administration, expressing surprise at their progress and reflecting on what Ghana had accomplished or failed to achieve in the preceding eight years. During a visit to MIIF on September 2, he commended the institution's achievements and remarked on the strong performance of other public bodies, including the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), where he had recently toured.

"I must congratulate you," he said, "because sometimes when we hear the things that you have done, the things that some organisations are doing now, we wonder; some of us keep wondering what really we have been doing in the past eight years." The Chief Justice's comments, which implicitly contrasted the administration's current governance with the previous eight-year period under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), drew attention due to his role as Chief Justice and the judiciary's duty to remain independent from the executive and political parties.

His elevation to the position came after a contentious process that included objections from the NPP and legal challenges to the removal of his predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo. Despite these controversies, Baffoe-Bonnie defended his appointment, emphasizing his commitment to merit-based leadership and judicial impartiality.
