Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie commends public institutions, questions Ghana’s performance over past eight years

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie recently praised the performance of public institutions, notably the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT). During a visit to MIIF on September 2, the Chief Justice highlighted the significant improvements he observed in their operations under the current administration.

He expressed his satisfaction with the work being done at MIIF and noted that information gathered during an earlier visit to SSNIT had further bolstered his positive assessment of these state institutions. The Chief Justice remarked, "I must congratulate you. I mean, you have done marvellously well." He acknowledged that sometimes, when they heard about the achievements of these organizations, one couldn't help but wonder what the state had been doing over the past eight years.

The Chief Justice specifically commended MIIF, stating, "See, because sometimes when we hear the things that you have done, the things that some organisations are doing now, we wonder; some of us keep wondering what really we have been doing in the past eight years." He then shared his concerns about the potential sale of SSNIT's major assets, citing Labadi Beach Hotel as an example.

He questioned how the country could be at a point where SSNIT was contemplating the disposal of such a prized asset. Reflecting on the earlier discussions about the possible sale of Labadi Beach Hotel, he wondered, "How could Ghana have sunk so low?"
