Borno commissioner retracts threat to ‘flog’ opposition, apologises to residents

Sainna Buba, the Borno State Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation, Youth and Sports Development, has formally retracted his controversial statement about "flogging" opposition supporters and issued an apology to residents and the public. The commissioner's remarks sparked criticism after a video surfaced showing him suggesting that those who supported the government would benefit, while those who opposed him could face consequences.

During an event, Buba declared, "The government is our government," and claimed that supporters would enjoy "the honey," while those who refused would be "flogged."

In an interview with journalists in Maiduguri, Buba attempted to clarify his comments, emphasizing that they were not intended to violate the fundamental rights of Borno residents. He stated that his remarks were not meant to harm or restrict the freedom of choice and association, which are enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution. Buba attempted to explain that his statement should not be taken literally, but the controversy persisted.

Recognizing the ongoing concern, Buba formally withdrew his statement and apologized to the people of Borno State and beyond for any offense caused. He distanced himself and the Borno State Government from his earlier remarks, emphasizing that they did not represent the views of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Governor Babagana Umara Zulum's administration.

Buba insisted that the APC-led administration respects the fundamental rights of citizens and does not seek to undermine them. He reiterated that the party and the administration uphold democratic values and will continue to do so until the end of Governor Zulum's term.
