Tsitsipas says Kyrgios's positive cocaine test 'kind of expected'

Stefanos Tsitsipas expressed his surprise on Monday that his former rival Nick Kyrgios tested positive for cocaine, leading to a provisional suspension. The Greek tennis player, currently ranked 53rd in the world, made this statement after defeating French 10th seed Arthur Fils in four sets at the US Open. Kyrgios, a former Wimbledon finalist, has been suspended and recently admitted to making a "huge mistake" after failing a drug test.

The 31-year-old Australian apologized, attributing his struggles to physical and mental injuries. Kyrgios, who briefly played doubles with Tsitsipas, was asked about the positive drugs test and stated he would not try to cover up the truth. He explained that he had heard similar behaviors from other players on the tour, leading him to consider the situation "pretty much expected."

Despite his natural talent, Kyrgios has faced numerous injuries, which have hindered his performance. His best achievement was reaching the Wimbledon final in 2022, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. In January, Kyrgios admitted that he would never be the player he once was due to his injuries.
