The UAE is right to focus on helping Emiratis 'make it in the Emirates'

As students prepare to return to school after the summer break, the UAE government has announced the launch of a national initiative to cultivate the next generation of Emirati experts in science and technology. This new program, known as the National Programme for Advanced Sciences and Technology, aims to build a pipeline of skilled professionals who can fill critical roles in crucial industries.

The government's decision to prioritize this initiative stems from the recognition that creating future industries requires a system in place to develop the individuals who can drive innovation, management, and leadership within these sectors. This mission is closely aligned with Operation 300bn, the UAE's strategy to boost the industrial sector's contribution to the national GDP to Dh300 billion by 2031.

The Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology has played a pivotal role in the development of this program. Given the rapid advancements in manufacturing and advanced industries, there is an increasing demand for skilled Emirati talent in these fields. The new initiative addresses this gap by integrating education, research, and industrial requirements.

The UAE has already established a solid foundation in this area by placing a strong emphasis on STEM education. The country's universities, such as Khalifa University and Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, have made significant strides in global research and rankings. Khalifa University, for instance, has secured a spot in the top 200 universities for four UN Sustainable Development Goals, while Mohamed Bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence has gained international recognition for its work in Arabic-language AI and technology partnerships.

These universities not only enhance the UAE's global reputation but also provide students with opportunities to learn, experiment, and contribute to the technologies of the future. The new initiative will further bolster the government's Emiratisation plans by prioritizing national talent development alongside the attraction of global expertise.
