Russian rapper Morgenshtern says he was offered a way back to Russia: visit the occupied Donbas, apologize, or fork over $1 million

Russian rapper Alisher Morgenshtern has shared that he was approached by individuals connected to the Russian government with an opportunity to return to the country under certain conditions. According to Morgenshtern, in an interview with YouTuber Yury Dud, these conditions included publicly supporting the war, visiting occupied territories, or paying $1 million as a "payment to do nothing."

Morgenshtern firmly declined these offers, stating that he believes he has not done anything wrong and does not want to endorse the war. He emphasized that any visit to the Donbas would be a political statement, adding, "Nobody just goes there." Morgenshtern's departure from Russia came after a meeting at Russia’s Presidential Administration, where he was threatened with a 15-year prison sentence and warned to avoid "provocative actions."

Prior to the war, Morgenshtern had expressed positive views about Russian President Vladimir Putin's policies. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Morgenshtern left the country in November 2021 after his work began to be investigated by the Investigative Committee for potential drug propaganda. In 2022, Russia’s Justice Ministry classified him as a "foreign agent," and in 2024, a criminal case was initiated against him for failing to comply with the terms of his designation, leading to his inclusion on the wanted list.

In April 2026, a Moscow court imposed an unspecified fine on Morgenshtern for publishing posts without the required disclaimer, freezing his property in Moscow.
