Germany blames Russia for Leipzig airport drone attack

Germany accused Russia of orchestrating a hybrid attack involving an explosive drone at an airport in Leipzig last month and responded by imposing diplomatic penalties. The European Union expressed solidarity with Germany, while NATO pledged to defend its members. Germany will close Russia's consulate in Bonn and terminate the Russian House cultural center contract in Berlin, according to Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

The government plans to intensify entry controls for Russian nationals and consider adding more individuals to EU sanctions lists. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that Russia is responsible for the hybrid attack in Leipzig on August 4, citing intelligence on the drone technology used. The incident is part of a broader pattern of Russian hybrid actions against Germany, the minister added.

"We view the Leipzig incident within the context of other hybrid actions," he noted. "We assume that Germany will be targeted by further hybrid attacks by Russia." The attack heightened concerns, as previous drone sightings near military and industrial sites raised alarms. Police successfully defused the explosives-laden drone near a Ukrainian cargo plane, and another drone was discovered near the airport with traces of an explosive substance.

The eastern German airport is crucial for transporting military goods, including for Germany's military and NATO allies, and serves as a base for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines. Chancellor Friedrich Merz had recently warned that perpetrators would face consequences, though he did not name any targets. The Russian House in Berlin, a seven-story building opened in 1984, is believed to serve as an intelligence hub and propaganda center.

Security services suspect over 100 individuals reside there with unclear identities and high energy consumption. Conservative security expert Roderich Kiesewetter claimed the building houses surveillance equipment used by hostile actors. Germany has maintained the Russian House open based on contractual ties with the Goethe Institute in Moscow, despite opposition.
