Germany blames Moscow for Leipzig drone attack, closes consulate and cultural center among sweeping diplomatic measures

On 1 September, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt formally blamed Russia for an explosives-laden drone attack on a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport, marking a significant escalation in diplomatic tensions. This finding prompted Germany to take sweeping measures against Moscow, including closing the Bonn consulate by 18 September, ending the operating agreement for the Russian House cultural center, tightening entry controls for Russian nationals, and seeking additional targets on EU sanctions lists.

The attack, which occurred on 4 August, involved three drones delivering explosives, with investigators discovering the third drone's suspected military explosive in a field near Kabelsketal on 14 August. The attack followed a series of suspected Russian sabotage incidents across Europe, including an incendiary device attack at the same airport in 2024, believed to be organized by Russian intelligence.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed solidarity with Germany's response, while Russia's Berlin embassy remained open, and the Russian Foreign Ministry warned of an "anti-Russian action" in response.
