Ranger killed by stray bullet in Maasai Mara

A 26-year-old ranger lost his life in the Maasai Mara after being shot by a stray bullet during a patrol with his team. The fatal incident took place on Monday morning near the Kenya-Tanzania border in the Indonyok-Olpaek area of Mara Triangle, Narok County. The ranger's patrol team came under attack from a buffalo, which prompted one of the rangers to fire two rounds from his AK-47 rifle in self-defense.

Unfortunately, one of the bullets ricocheted and struck fellow ranger Joshua Saitoti Olesitoi in the left hip. Emergency medical services were dispatched to evacuate the injured ranger, but he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the park clinic. The scene was thoroughly investigated and documented before his body was transferred to a mortuary for preservation prior to a postmortem examination.

Local authorities are currently probing the circumstances leading to the ranger's death. Such encounters with wild animals are not uncommon in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. In a separate development, police in Tigania West, located in Meru County, have launched an investigation into the murder of an unidentified man whose body was discovered with severe wounds on Monday.

The deceased, named Kinyua Kambura from Mwikanda Kaongo area, had been living alone prior to his death. The body exhibited cut marks on his face and right hand, suggesting he may have been attacked and killed by unknown assailants. The remains have been sent to Meru Referral Hospital Mortuary for further examination, and police are actively investigating to determine the cause and identity of the perpetrator.
