Premier League clubs smash summer transfer spending record

The Premier League has shattered its summer transfer spending record for the second year in a row, with total gross spend reaching £3.198 billion. Manchester City's £65 million acquisition of Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye led the charge, with a further 11 high-profile signings occurring this summer, including Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa to Chelsea for £117 million and Tottenham Hotspur's record-breaking £100 million purchase of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.

Liverpool also made a significant move, agreeing to pay Paris St Germain £107 million for France forward Bradley Barcola, with the deal potentially increasing to £123 million. The dominance of Premier League clubs over European rivals is evident, as only two transfers in excess of £60 million involved non-Premier League sides - Yan Diomande's move to Real Madrid and Anthony Gordon's transfer from Newcastle to Barcelona.

Around 38 percent of deals were made between Premier League clubs, up from 30 percent last summer. Chelsea and Manchester City led the spending spree, with the latter investing £347 million in new manager Xabi Alonso's recruitment drive. Promoted Ipswich Town, Coventry City, and Hull City collectively spent over £400 million to prepare for their debut in the Premier League.
