NPS sets out 3 key principles to guide policing ahead of 2027 elections

The National Police Service (NPS) has outlined three core principles - professionalism, impartiality, and accountability - that will guide policing ahead of the 2027 General Elections. These principles underpin the Service's operational approach to ensuring a secure and democratic electoral process. NPS spokesperson and Director of Corporate Communications Muchiri Nyaga made the commitment to uphold these values and respect for human rights while reaffirming the Service's commitment to constitutional policing.

The NPS also recognizes the vital role played by civil society organizations, such as Missing Voices, in engaging with the Service and identifying gaps to improve systems and rebuild public confidence in the police. The commitment comes as the NPS intensifies planning for security during the 2027 elections, having recently held a two-day Election Security Planning Workshop in Nairobi.

The workshop focused on reviewing a draft Election Security Preparedness Road Map and assessing the Service's progress. Senior police officers and representatives from partner organizations discussed public order management, technology in policing, police accountability, training and capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.

The NPS emphasizes the importance of constructive cooperation between the police and other stakeholders, including media, civil society, and other institutions involved in election security planning, for ensuring a safe and peaceful electoral period.
