ECL begins precautionary mine sealing in Raniganj coal belt’s Khandra Colliery over surface cracks

The Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has initiated precautionary measures to seal the Khandra Colliery in the Raniganj coal belt following the discovery of surface cracks. This decision was prompted by reports of cracks near the Nikanth Temple area, where unauthorized structures and illegal occupants were present. The cracks and subsidence were first observed on July 28, raising concerns about potential risks to the mine's safety and the surrounding environment.

ECL stated that the measures are being taken as a preventive and proactive safety intervention, aimed at protecting employees and the surrounding areas. The company emphasized that this decision was not based on any imminent danger but rather to ensure the safety of all stakeholders. They assured that the precautionary measures will not disrupt the existing water and electricity supply to residential quarters in the area.

For the time being, the existing workforce will be reassigned to other units within the same mine or neighboring mines, depending on operational requirements. The duration of the mine seal remains undetermined and will be confirmed based on expert advice, technical assessments, and adherence to established mine-safety practices.

Raniganj, one of India's largest and oldest coal belts, has a history of hazardous incidents, including a landslide in May 2026 that resulted in the death of one worker and several injuries. The area has also experienced recurring ground subsidence, leading to cracks in homes and forcing many locals to abandon their residences, turning several villages into ghost towns.
