NPP Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency election dispute escalates into court battle

A dispute over the NPP constituency-level election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, located in the Greater Accra Region, has escalated to a legal battle. Some party members, including Gideon Poku, are challenging the validity of the election held on August 9, 2026, claiming their names were removed from the polling station album during the nomination process.

Their exclusion allegedly stemmed from opposition to the Constituency Secretary, who was also campaigning for the position of Constituency Chairman, and his team. The party members sought an injunction from court to halt the electoral area elections. Despite the pending case, the election proceeded, and the court granted an injunction against the elections.

However, the election took place on August 9, with electoral officers whose identities and authority are disputed. The petitioners claim the Electoral Commission declined to conduct the election due to the court order. They are also contesting the authority of Constituency Chairman Alhaji Usman and Rachael Tutu, alleging they supervised the disputed election.

The aggrieved members have initiated contempt proceedings against the two for allegedly breaching the court order. A separate court process has been served on the supposed winners of the election, seeking to restrain them from claiming to be duly elected constituency executives and annul the disputed election. The NPP headquarters has also seen allegations of assault, with a bailiff and a plaintiff reportedly assaulted by the newly elected Constituency Chairman and some of his executives.

The case has been reported to the Nima Police Station and is under investigation. The petitioners have warned that failing to resolve the dispute could exacerbate tensions within the constituency. The allegations of assault, contempt, and breach of the court order remain contested and are subject to investigation and resolution by the relevant authorities and the courts.
