NPP Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency election dispute heads to court

A legal dispute has arisen over the electoral process in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Ghana's Greater Accra Region. The controversy originated during the nomination stage for polling station executives when some party members, including Gideon Poku, alleged that their names were omitted from the list due to opposition to the then Constituency Secretary, who was also running for Constituency Chairman.

The aggrieved members sought an injunction to halt the electoral process, but it was reportedly ignored. Despite this, the election took place on August 9, 2026, with some questioning the legitimacy of those handling the election. The affected party members have initiated contempt proceedings against the two individuals they claim oversaw the election.

Additionally, persons identified as the supposed election winners are facing contempt proceedings to prevent them from claiming to be elected officials, with the intent to annul the disputed election. The situation was further complicated by an alleged assault at the NPP headquarters involving the newly elected Constituency Chairman, Issa Sawadogo, and some of his executives against a bailiff and plaintiff.

The NPP headquarters has reported the incident to the Nima Police Station. The affected party members have asserted that their complaints have not been addressed by the NPP headquarters. The ongoing legal battles and alleged assault may exacerbate tensions within the constituency.
