NAIMOS arrests 10 illegal miners, seize equipment near Gbinyiri

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in partnership with the Ghana Army's Northern Command and the Ghana Police Service have apprehended ten individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining near Gbinyiri in the Savannah Region. During the operation from August 25 to 27, 2026, authorities seized various pieces of equipment, including two excavators, three monitors, a Toyota Hilux, a fuel bowser, firearms, and ammunition.

Additionally, 25 live cartridges were recovered. The team conducted a reconnaissance mission on August 19, which confirmed the presence of illegal mining activities in the area. They observed significant environmental damage at the site. As a result of the operation, ten suspects were arrested, consisting of three Chinese nationals and seven Ghanaians.

The Task Force dismantled 15 makeshift structures and destroyed a generator to prevent any immediate resumption of illegal mining activities. The confiscated items and suspects were handed over to the Savannah Regional Police Command in Damongo for further investigation and legal proceedings. The operation is part of NAIMOS' ongoing commitment to combat illegal mining and safeguard water bodies and the environment in the Savannah Region.

NAIMOS will continue to work with the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service, and other relevant institutions to disrupt illegal mining operations and protect vulnerable areas.
