Merdeka break expected to bring RM36m to southern Thailand from 60,000 Malaysian tourists

Around 60,000 Malaysian tourists are anticipated to contribute approximately RM36 million to Thailand's southern regions during the five-day Merdeka Day and school holiday stretch, according to the New Straits Times. Thailand-Asean Halal Trade and Tourism Association president Aida Oujeh made this estimation, covering travelers arriving between August 29 and September 2.

The projected spending is derived from an average of RM600 per tourist on lodging, dining, shopping, and entertainment. Popular destinations include Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Satun, Betong, Bangkok, and Krabi. Hotels in these areas are reported to be nearly 95% occupied, indicating a high level of demand from Malaysian tourists during the holiday season.

Entry points such as Danok, Padang Besar, Wang Kelian, and Betong are particularly busy, benefiting various sectors including hotels, restaurants, retailers, and tourism operators. Aida noted that this surge suggests the recent boycott call initiated on August 17, following an incident where 17 Malaysian motorcyclists were cited for traffic violations in Hat Yai, did not significantly deter Malaysian travelers from visiting Thailand during the holiday period.

This boycott was sparked by a viral video alleging that Thai authorities had "bullied" the tourists.
