Merdeka break expected to bring RM36m to southern Thailand from 60,000 Malaysian tourists

KOTA BARU, Sept 1 — An estimated 60,000 Malaysian tourists are set to contribute around RM36 million to southern Thailand during the five-day Merdeka Day and school holiday period, according to the New Straits Times. The figure encompasses visitors entering the country from August 29 to September 2. The projection is based on an average spending of RM600 per tourist on accommodation, dining, shopping, and leisure activities.

The primary destinations for these Malaysian tourists are Hat Yai, Phatthalung, Satun, Betong, Bangkok, and Krabi. Hotels in these popular locations are reportedly 95% booked, indicating a high demand from Malaysian tourists during the holiday season. Entry points such as Danok, Padang Besar, Wang Kelian, and Betong have seen a significant influx, benefiting various sectors including hotels, restaurants, retailers, and tourism operators.

The surge in visitors is said to have been unaffected by a recent boycott call following an incident on August 17. That day, 17 Malaysian motorcyclists were fined a total of 15,000 baht (approximately RM1,850) for traffic violations in Hat Yai, following a viral video that alleged Thai authorities had "bullied" them.
