KAWU ends 2-day strike, vows to resume duties

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has successfully ended a two-day strike and announced that affected workers will resume their duties immediately. The agreement reached between KAWU and the relevant employers addresses key labour issues, including agency fees, Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiations with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the union recognition dispute with Jambojet, and protection for strike participants.

Under the Return-to-Work Agreement, KAWU has directed all affected members to return to normal duties upon the signing of the contract. The union has also agreed to remit agency fees currently held by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) with immediate effect. Discussions on the CBA between KAWU and KCAA are set to commence as both parties pledge to negotiate in good faith and honor the outcome of the talks.

KCAA management has committed to negotiating in good faith and implementing the agreement's outcomes. The union and the authority will proceed with the negotiations to resolve the outstanding issues that triggered the industrial action. Additionally, KAWU and Jambojet have agreed to await a court decision on the latter's recognition dispute, which is currently pending. They will respect the eventual court ruling and adhere to any directives issued.

In terms of worker protection, the agreement ensures that participants in the strike will not face victimization, intimidation, discrimination, or disciplinary action due to their involvement in the industrial action. Aviation workers can now confidently resume their normal operations following the successful resolution of these labour issues.
