Mahama urges Non-Aligned Movement members to strengthen Global South influence

President John Dramani Mahama has urged members of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to harness their common interests to amplify their collective influence in global affairs. Delivering his remarks on Tuesday, September 1, during a high-level commemorative gathering in Belgrade, Serbia, marking the 65th anniversary of the initial Non-Aligned Heads of State or Government conference, Mahama emphasized that the NAM's diversity should be viewed as a formidable asset.

"Our diversity is a source of strength," he stated, advocating for member states to collaborate in areas of mutual interest. "By leveraging our shared interests, we can fortify the NAM's unified voice and direct our efforts towards initiatives that yield significant impact." Mahama reiterated Ghana's steadfast dedication to collaborating with all NAM members in bolstering multilateralism and advancing a more equitable international framework.

"Ghana remains steadfast in our commitment to work alongside every member of the NAM to enhance multilateralism, promote a more equitable international order, and ensure the Global South's voice gains greater traction," he affirmed. The President also cautioned against aligning with either the East or the West, advocating for a forward-looking path guided by unity and a shared dedication to progress.

"As we gaze towards the future, our trajectory is unequivocal: not east nor west, but moving forward in unison," Mahama declared. He implored NAM members to embody the core spirit of Belgrade, transforming their collective power into tangible actions that benefit their populations. "With principles, purpose, and confidence, let us rekindle the Belgrade spirit and convert our collective strength into practical benefits for our people," Mahama concluded.

Ghana's presence at the commemorative event underscores its historical role as a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, and its ongoing commitment to principles such as sovereign equality, non-interference, peace, multilateralism, and enhanced economic cooperation among developing nations.
