President Mahama arrives in Belgrade for 65th Non-Aligned Movement summit

President John Dramani Mahama has urged the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to shift from mere declarations to concrete actions that can bring about tangible results in tackling global issues. Speaking at a high-level commemorative gathering marking the 65th anniversary of the first Non-Aligned Movement conference in Belgrade, Serbia, Mahama stressed that the strength of the movement should be gauged not just by the number of member states but by its capacity to use its collective influence to achieve meaningful outcomes through coordinated diplomacy.

Stating that the principles that underpinned the foundation of the movement remain pertinent even after 65 years, Mahama emphasized the need for a shift from declarations to actions. He recalled the bold stance taken by the former Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito at the inaugural conference, asserting that non-aligned countries were entitled to participate in resolving global problems, especially those threatening international peace and global stability.

Mahama echoed this sentiment, asserting that the assertion remains highly relevant and should guide the movement's approach to addressing contemporary global challenges.

President Mahama called for enhanced cooperation and coordination among NAM member states, particularly within international bodies like the United Nations and other multilateral institutions, where their interests intersect. He argued that stronger coordination would enable the movement's member states to wield their collective influence more effectively in international affairs.

He further highlighted the importance of maintaining follow-up on decisions made at NAM summits and ministerial conferences, urging member states to set strategic priorities where the movement could have a significant impact, rather than allowing commitments to accumulate without corresponding action.

On a positive note, Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, the host country, promised to strengthen partnerships with NAM countries. He announced plans to facilitate increased student exchanges between Serbia and NAM nations, further cementing Serbia's commitment to enhancing collaboration with the Non-Aligned Movement.
