Mahama honours Nkrumah’s role in founding Non-Aligned Movement

President John Dramani Mahama has praised Ghana's first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, for his pioneering role in establishing the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) during the Cold War era. At the 65th Anniversary Conference of NAM in Belgrade, Serbia, Mahama honored other key NAM leaders, including Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, and Sukarno of Indonesia.

He emphasized that Belgrade holds a significant place in international relations history, as leaders from newly independent nations gathered to oppose colonialism, foreign domination, and the Cold War rivalry. Mahama highlighted that Nkrumah's vision for Ghana was clear: a nation that would not align with any power bloc but would instead maintain independent foreign policy, sovereignty, and self-determination.

He noted that Ghana's participation in the Bandung Conference of 1955, which laid the foundation for the Non-Aligned Movement, had already shaped the country's tradition of engagement. Today, Ghana continues to uphold Nkrumah's vision of positive, principled, and active engagement in international affairs, resisting pressures from competing geopolitical interests while advocating for peace, dialogue, and disarmament.
