(LEAD) Defense ministry seeks 8.2 pct budget increase for 2027 amid OPCON transition, forces reform push

Seoul's defense ministry has requested an 8.2 percent increase in its 2027 budget, aiming to expedite the transition of wartime operational control (OPCON) from the United States and enhance military capabilities amid demographic challenges. The proposed budget of 73.27 trillion won (US$53.5 billion) marks the largest increase since 2008, representing 2.33 percent of the country's GDP.

Key focuses include strengthening self-reliant defense, transitioning to a technology-centered military, and securing critical capabilities for the OPCON transfer. Funds will also be allocated for nuclear-powered attack submarines, the KF-21 fighter jet, and upgrading defense systems against North Korean threats. The military plans to modernize forces and capabilities, using the budget to transition to AI and unmanned systems, with a focus on improving drone and anti-drone capabilities.
