Jonathan Kuminga, the former No. 7 overall pick by the Golden State Warriors, has been in the news for his decision to sign a two-year, $12 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves. This move has drawn criticism, as it is significantly less lucrative than the three-year deals reportedly discussed with the Warriors just a year prior.

The Warriors were said to have offered Kuminga either a $75 million deal with a team option on the third year or a $54 million deal without an option. Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, insisted on a player option, which led to a protracted negotiation process that delayed Golden State's other moves. After a strong start to the 2025-26 season, Kuminga was eventually traded to the Atlanta Hawks.

Turner defended his client, stating that money should not precede basketball and that the next free agency window will be more favorable for Kuminga. However, his attempts to spin the situation have faced skepticism, with critics highlighting the significant difference between the $6 million Kuminga will make next season and the potential $25 million he could have earned.
