Indy continues as gateway to 2028 Olympics with hosting national indoor championships

The USA Track & Field (USATF) will host its national indoor championships in Indianapolis for each of the next two years, marking its first time as a host city for the event since its inception in 1906. The championships will take place at Fall Creek Pavilion on the Indiana State Fairgrounds, with the first meet scheduled for February 19-21, 2027, and the second for February 18-20, 2028.

The 2027 meet aligns with the 40th anniversary of the inaugural World Indoor Championships held at the Hoosier Dome in 1987, and the 20th anniversary of the most recent nationals held at Carroll Stadium in 2007. USATF headquarters are situated in Indianapolis, and the organization's CEO, Max Siegel, expressed his excitement about reinvigorating the connection between the organization and the Indianapolis community.

The Indiana Sports Corp. sees the indoor nationals as part of its 2050 Vision strategy, emphasizing the growing importance of Olympic sports and the potential for Indianapolis to become a gateway to the Los Angeles Olympics in July 2028. USA Swimming and USA Gymnastics have already chosen Indianapolis for their respective national championships and training center, further solidifying the city's status as an emerging hub for Olympic sports.

Fall Creek Pavilion, which has hosted indoor track meets since January 2024, underwent a $50 million renovation to transform it into a multi-use facility measuring 196,000 square feet with a 14,000-square-foot lobby and connectors to two 60,000-square-foot buildings. The pavilion's quality is highlighted by the fact that four collegiate records have been set there during the past two Big Ten indoor meets.

USATF CEO Max Siegel also hinted at the possibility of outdoor nationals returning to Indianapolis, stating that there are few venues outside of Eugene, Oregon, that could accommodate the meet. Discussions are underway with IU Indy leaders regarding potential renovations to Carroll Stadium to host the outdoor nationals in the future.
