I will decide when the time comes – Kurt Okraku on GFA presidential third-term bid

Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has not ruled out the possibility of seeking a third term in office, emphasizing that his primary focus remains on leading the country's football governing body. Currently serving since 2019, Okraku is eligible to run again after a constitutional amendment in 2025 permitted presidents to serve up to three terms.

This amendment was approved by 114 out of 124 members present, enabling the 54-year-old to potentially pursue another mandate in the 2027 elections. When quizzed by 3Sports about his intentions, Okraku stated that it was too early to make a definitive commitment. He clarified that there are still approximately 18 months until the General Assembly elections, urging him to concentrate on his current tenure and explore ways to improve the state of Ghanaian football.

Okraku affirmed that he and the broader football community would make their preferences known when the time arrives. He also underscored that he has no ambitions of indefinitely holding onto the presidency, stating that he will eventually step down. Okraku first assumed the presidency of the GFA in 2019, following the efforts of the Normalisation Committee, which was set up post the previous football administration's dissolution.

He secured his second consecutive four-year term in 2023, after George Afriyie, the former GFA vice-president, was barred from running due to disqualification, thereby making Okraku the only candidate in contention. The 2027 elections are anticipated to garner considerable attention, with former Black Stars captain Andre Ayew rumored to possibly contest, alongside Afriyie, who is also expected to run for the presidency.
