I got a sneak peek at TP-Link’s upcoming Wi-Fi 8 routers — and improved range and reliability are their biggest upgrades

TP-Link's upcoming Wi-Fi 8 routers promise significant improvements in range and reliability. Unlike previous generations, Wi-Fi 8 focuses on extending connectivity and ensuring uninterrupted online experiences. While the top speed of 46 Gbps equals Wi-Fi 7's capabilities, Wi-Fi 8's Ultra High Reliability (UHR) approach enhances performance over longer distances and can manage increased data traffic, minimizing interference.

Spectral efficiency is a key aspect, which involves squeezing more data into the airwaves more efficiently. The first commercial Wi-Fi 8 routers are expected to be released by TP-Link, including the Archer 8 Ultra and Deco 8 Ultra models. These routers feature sleek designs and boast powerful hardware, such as two 10 Gbps inputs and USB ports for storage device connections.

The new Wi-Fi 8 standard introduces advanced features like Stability Engine, Unequal Modulation (UEQM), and Multi-Link Operations (MLO) to optimize data throughput by up to 24% compared to Wi-Fi 7. Enhanced internal antennas on the routers also contribute to improved signal strength, coverage, and reduced disconnections. TP-Link plans to roll out Wi-Fi 8-compatible products throughout 2027, starting with the Archer 8 Ultra in October and the Deco 8 Ultra in early 2027.

The premium pricing for these devices may decrease over time, but they represent a substantial upgrade for home networks, potentially eliminating the need for numerous Ethernet cables.
