TP-Link's first consumer Wi-Fi 8 router opens for pre-orders September 30, but its US launch remains uncertain

Three months after TP-Link announced its first consumer Wi-Fi 8 router would launch in the fall, the company has unveiled more details about the Archer 8 Ultra. The router, which was revealed at IFA 2026, is a tri-band device rated for 19Gbps aggregate wireless speeds. It features 18 internal antennas, 10Gbps wired connectivity, and promises to cover a 3,600-square-foot home. TP-Link's president, Jeff Barney, emphasized that the Archer 8 Ultra is designed to provide consistent coverage.

European models of the router are rated for 19Gbps, while North American models have yet to be specified. The router utilizes TP-Link's StabilityEngine, a suite of Wi-Fi 8 technologies aimed at enhancing coverage, managing congestion, and minimizing interference. Features like Dynamic Sub-band Operation, Non-Primary Channel Access, Enhanced Long Range, and Distributed Resource Units are designed to optimize performance in challenging environments.

Internal testing by TP-Link suggests up to 33% higher throughput compared to Wi-Fi 7 hardware, along with improved performance under heavy interference and multi-floor coverage.

Wi-Fi 8, officially known as IEEE 802.11bn, emphasizes Ultra High Reliability over the highest possible peak speed, as the standard is still a draft and is not expected to be finalized until 2028. TP-Link plans to release additional Wi-Fi 8 routers in the first and second quarters of 2027, including the Deco 8 Ultra, Roam 8, range extenders, and adapters.

However, the US launch of the Archer 8 Ultra remains uncertain due to the device's status as a foreign-produced product, which is currently on the FCC's Covered List and subject to conditional approval from the Department of War or Homeland Security.
