How 15 NYSC members, others were rescued from kidnappers in Kogi — Police

The Kogi State Police Command shared details on how security forces saved 15 National Youth Service Corps members and six others from kidnappers in Egume Forest, Ofu Local Government Area. Police Commissioner Naziru Kankarofi spoke about the rescue during a TV broadcast. He revealed that the operation began immediately upon receiving an alert, with military, police, Department of State Services, local vigilantes, and hunters all participating.

Kankarofi highlighted the importance of the local hunters and vigilantes due to their knowledge of the area. The search and rescue mission started right away, with the forces narrowing down the kidnapper's location and receiving assistance from local hunters and vigilantes. A gun battle erupted on Monday afternoon at the kidnappers' camp, leading to the rescue of the victims.

Two of the rescued individuals suffered gunshot injuries, one from a corps member and another civilian abducted from a second vehicle. Four suspected kidnappers were killed during the exchange of fire, while others escaped with bullet wounds. The police are still in the area tracking the remaining suspects, and the Kogi Command is coordinating with Enugu State to prevent any escape routes.

Kankarofi urged residents and travelers to remain calm and continue their journeys through Kogi State, assuring them of the state's overall safety and the prompt response of security forces to any threats.
