30 years after, Gang leader found guilty of killing rapper, Tupac

In a Las Vegas courtroom, Duane "Keffe D" Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader, was found guilty on Monday of the 1996 murder of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur. The jury, after a brief deliberation, confirmed Davis' guilt of first-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Davis faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.

The prosecutor, Binu Palal, argued that Davis, as a gang leader, could not tolerate the beating of his nephew by members of Shakur's crew at a Las Vegas casino on September 7, 1996. In response, Davis allegedly acquired a gun, gathered his group, and targeted Shakur. Shakur, traveling to Las Vegas for a Mike Tyson fight, was shot by a gunman in a white Cadillac that pulled up alongside Shakur's BMW at a red light.

Davis is believed to have handed the gun to someone in the back seat of the Cadillac and ordered the shooter to kill Shakur, who died six days later.

Davis is the sole individual from the Cadillac that night who is still alive. Marion "Suge" Knight, the driver of the BMW, was also wounded during the incident. Davis, whose Crips were one of many rival gangs controlling parts of Los Angeles in the 1990s, is the only person to have been charged in connection with Shakur's murder. Sentencing is set for October 13.
