Hamas security chief captured in Gaza operation, brought wounded to Israel

On Tuesday, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out strikes across the Gaza Strip in response to threats against Israeli forces. There were no reported casualties among IDF troops, and none were trapped. The strikes aimed to neutralize an imminent threat. A military source confirmed the operation was nearing its conclusion, according to Maariv.

Al Hadath reported that the IDF had collaborated with Gazan militias to attempt kidnapping a Hamas official near the Red Cross headquarters in Gaza. The operation was exposed following the strikes, as per IDF sources who did not deny reports of Israel working with Gazan militias to apprehend a senior Hamas official. The IDF primarily emphasized removing Hamas threats, with a clearer statement expected once operation results are clearer.

Ten explosions were heard in Gaza City as a result of the strikes, reported by Palestinian sources. Israeli military aircraft were seen flying low over the area, while drones dropped a large number of bombs, as reported by Al Jazeera. IDF special forces reportedly entered the American Hospital area in Gaza City's al-Katiba area. Palestinian reports described exchanges of fire and shooting involving special forces in western Gaza City, with a large number of Gazan casualties.

Separately, smoke shells were reportedly fired in the Shati refugee camp in western Gaza City, along the coast. Local gangs, though contributing to the chaos, are not primary drivers of toppling Hamas. Political leaks suggesting local gangs could replace Hamas in the near or medium term are unrealistic. Local gangs can only survive with IDF protection and can only confront Hamas in small, limited operations.

Despite their numbers ranging from dozens to a couple of hundred, Hamas still has thousands of foot soldiers. Long-term solutions to Hamas' fall likely involve some arm of the Palestinian Authority or a combination of the PA, Egypt, the Israeli Security Forces (ISF), and IDF support.
