Ebola outbreak: Lagos reviews Mainland Hospital’s emergency readiness

The Democratic Republic of Congo grapples with an increasingly rampant Ebola epidemic, surpassing the 6,000 case mark and nearing 3,000 fatalities, according to the latest figures released on Monday. Amid the crisis, a silver lining emerges: over 1,360 individuals have recovered from the virus. Eastern Congo, plagued by conflict, mass displacement, and population movements, serves as a breeding ground for the epidemic's rapid spread.

Local health workers' strike exacerbates the existing challenges, with displacement sites presenting the most dire situations due to deplorable living conditions. The virus has recently infiltrated two additional health zones, raising global health concerns. The World Health Organisation asserts that the outbreak remains uncontrolled, fearing it may outstrip the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which claimed over 11,000 lives in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.

The contagion is traced back to February, though formal declarations only arrived in May. Currently, infections and deaths occur predominantly within local communities, rather than under close surveillance. Response teams encounter significant hostility while attempting to curb the spread, with an armed attack on an Ebola burial site outside Mambasa in Ituri province resulting in injuries to a response worker.

Frontline workers demand enhanced security to conduct their work without endangering their lives. Traditional burial practices pose a challenge to containment efforts, as deceased victims remain highly contagious. Authorities mandate state-managed burials for suspected cases to prevent transmission, often leading to friction and protests from grieving families and communities.

Treatment options are limited, with the current epidemic stemming from the Bundibugyo strain, a rare variant lacking approved treatments or vaccines. A vaccination campaign has been launched, targeting health workers and front-line staff with the Ervebo vaccine, proven effective against the Zaire strain. Clinical trials are underway to secure a licensed vaccine for the Bundibugyo variant.

Emergency containment measures have crippled daily life across six affected provinces, imposing restrictions on public gatherings, enforcing social distancing, and mandating airport closures. Ituri province faces a double burden from the epidemic and ongoing rebel violence. Advocacy groups urge authorities to deepen community engagement and build local trust.

The World Health Organisation warns of persistent cross-border transmission risks, despite neighboring Uganda declaring itself Ebola-free last month. Balancing immediate epidemiological containment with fostering enduring community trust remains the central challenge for international health bodies and local administrations.
