Ebola outbreak: Lagos reviews Mainland Hospital’s emergency readiness

The Lagos State Government has conducted a thorough review of Mainland Hospital, also known as the Infectious Disease Hospital, to ensure it is fully prepared for any potential outbreak of the Ebola Virus Disease. This assessment was carried out by the state's Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, who shared details of the review on social media.

Abayomi emphasized that the evaluation was aimed at preparing the hospital for "any eventualities" in light of the expanding Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

During the assessment, which was conducted alongside the hospital's Medical Director, Dr. Adejumo, and other key staff members, various aspects of the hospital's infrastructure were examined to confirm their readiness for a rapid response to a high-consequence outbreak. This included critical areas such as the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC), diagnostic equipment, oxygen supply systems, triage and isolation facilities, and external site works.

The inspection was aimed at ensuring the hospital's equipment and facilities were in full operational readiness, with a particular focus on maintaining high biosafety standards and ensuring optimal patient care.

Following the assessment, several maintenance needs were identified across key sections of the hospital, including the EOC, biobank, pharmacy, catering services, and drainage systems. These areas require immediate attention to uphold the highest standards of safety and efficacy in patient care. The health commissioner reiterated the ministry's commitment to strengthening Lagos State's health security measures and maintaining maximum operational readiness to safeguard public health.

Globally, the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, since its declaration on May 15, 2026, has resulted in over 5,600 confirmed cases and more than 2,700 deaths, driven by the rare Bundibugyo species of the virus, for which there are currently no vaccines or treatments. In response to this crisis, the United Nations chief, Antonio Guterres, has appealed for $1.1 billion to fund a comprehensive aid plan aimed at combating the Ebola epidemic in the DRC.
