Crystal Palace hijack Sunderland's £30m Fofana deal

Crystal Palace is attempting to outmaneuver Sunderland in their pursuit of Lyon's Malick Fofana, a 21-year-old winger who has agreed to a five-year contract at Sunderland's Stadium of Light. The Belgian forward's £30 million transfer fee, with an add-on potential of £4.3 million, is now under negotiation between Fofana, the clubs, and Lyon.

Prior to considering Sunderland, Fofana was excited about the prospect of joining the Black Cats, who had recently secured their place in the Europa League following their first European campaign in 51 years. However, Arsenal's pursuit of Fofana was unsuccessful due to their inability to agree on a transfer fee with Lyon. Fofana, who began his career with KAA Gent, would likely join Sunderland alongside Kevin Danso, who is set to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan with an option to buy.

Sunderland's summer transfer window saw the signing of defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, as well as midfielder Jules Ahoka, following a seventh-place finish in their inaugural top-flight season. The club has started the 2026-27 season with a win over Fulham, despite suffering a loss in their opening match against Ipswich.
