Colombia’s New Government Reportedly Held Exorcisms at Ministries

Reports have surfaced regarding exorcisms taking place at two Colombian ministries during the initial days of President Abelardo de la Espriella's administration. The rituals, which took place on August 8 and 9, occurred at the Ministries of Science, Technology and Innovation and Mines and Energy, respectively. The events were authorized to occur within the official buildings, as priests conducted prayer and blessing rites, and potentially performed exorcisms.

The presence of religious figures in government offices has sparked controversy and criticism in Colombia, as the activities occurred just one and two days after the presidential inauguration. A group of priests, including Robert Rodriguez Severiche, a priest authorized to perform exorcisms, were granted access to the Ministry of Science on August 8.

Later, on August 9, a similar group was permitted to enter the Ministry of Mines and Energy, where Bishop Dimas Acuña Jiménez participated. However, the purpose of these visits remains unconfirmed, as the government agencies have not publicly disclosed the details of the activities conducted by the priests. The controversy has taken on a political dimension, as the events occurred during a time when President Espriella has frequently referenced God and his religious beliefs.

The use of institutional spaces for religious activities has raised questions about the separation of religion and state, which is constitutionally mandated in Colombia.
