China-Nepal flood toll tops 1,000 as tunnel rescue offers last hope

NUWAKOT, Nepal - The death toll from catastrophic Himalayan glacial floods surpassed the tragic milestone of 1,000 on Tuesday as Chinese and Nepali rescue teams continued their relentless search for survivors. Over 4,500 individuals remain unaccounted for following the catastrophic event triggered by a high-altitude glacial collapse, which unleashed a torrent of icy water, rocks, and debris that swept away entire communities and left a trail of devastation across Nepal.

Nepali rescue forces are laboring furiously to excavate, drill, and blast through the debris in a race against time to rescue approximately 100 hydropower workers who are believed to be trapped in several tunnels. To date, only bodies have been recovered from tunnels clogged by sludge, and the likelihood of finding survivors appears increasingly slim. Rescue operations intensified through the night on Tuesday, but an unexpected surge of water into a hole being dug forced rescuers to commence a new excavation site.

Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the catastrophe as "unimaginable and heartbreaking." With mortuaries overwhelmed in Nepal, authorities are struggling to cope with the sheer magnitude of the disaster, as the recovery efforts face numerous challenges and the hope of finding survivors dwindles.
