China-Nepal flood toll tops 1,000 as tunnel rescue offers last hope

NUWAKOT, Nepal - The death toll from catastrophic Himalayan glacial floods surpassed the tragic 1,000 mark on Tuesday, as Chinese and Nepali rescue teams continued their exhaustive efforts to locate survivors, including at least a dozen individuals potentially trapped within hydropower tunnels. Approximately 4,500 individuals remain missing following the massive surge of icy water, rocks, and debris, unleashed by a high-altitude glacial collapse on Wednesday. The relentless torrent obliterated numerous settlements and carved a devastating path across Nepal.

In a race against time, Nepali rescue crews are tirelessly digging, drilling, and blasting through debris in a bid to extricate around 100 hydropower workers believed to be trapped in multiple tunnels. To date, rescuers have recovered only bodies from tunnels obstructed by sludge, and the likelihood of discovering survivors appears to be dwindling.

Excavators toiled into the night on Tuesday, but an army update reported that a significant volume of water began flowing into a hole they were excavating, compelling them to commence a new opening.

Nepal's Prime Minister, Balendra Shah, described the catastrophe as "unimaginable and heartbreaking." With mortuaries overflowing in Nepal, authorities are facing a massive humanitarian crisis.
