Calgary home with pro-Trump flags becomes vandalism target in cross-border trade war

Calgary residents outraged by the ongoing U.S. tariff trade war have taken their frustration out on a pro-Trump home through various means, including eggs, dog feces, and even arson suggestions online. The homeowner, who identifies as a strong supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, expressed disappointment in those taking such actions.

"The position of some would be to say, ‘Hey, this guy, he doesn’t agree with what we agree in, politically (even though) he goes to work, he pays his taxes … (so) let’s run them out of town,’" he said. He emphasized that such behavior is not conducive to a democratic society. The homeowner, who wishes to remain anonymous due to concerns for his safety, reported the incident to the police, but the authorities stated they lacked sufficient grounds for criminal charges.

The house, located near Calgary’s downtown, features two prominent pro-Trump flags and a large American flag hanging from the balcony. The homeowner explained that the flags symbolize their patriotic support for Trump and acceptance of conservative views being marginalized. Despite his support for some of Trump's policies, such as taxes and immigration, the homeowner noted that the reference to 2028 is a joke, as presidents cannot serve a third term under the U.S. Constitution.

This is not the first time the homeowner's home has faced vandalism; a retaining wall was defaced with graffiti during the 2024 U.S. presidential election. The trade war between Canada and the U.S. began just over a week ago when the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on about $28 billion in Canadian exports. Canada has retaliated with its own tariffs set to take effect on September 8.

The homeowner, along with others, expressed hope that the conflict will eventually be resolved, although it remains uncertain when.
