Bombardier to buy Canadian factory from supplier Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. has announced it will acquire Mitsubishi’s primary Canadian aerospace factory, relocating an operation previously outsourced. The purchase of MHI Canada Aerospace Inc. facilities in Mississauga, Ontario, will integrate nearly 750 Mitsubishi employees into Bombardier’s existing workforce of around 18,000.

The agreement also places MHI's 270,000-square-foot facility responsible for wing assembly, fuselage, and flight control installations for certain Bombardier aircraft under Bombardier's control. David Murray, Bombardier’s executive vice-president of manufacturing, stated that this deal marks a crucial step in the company’s long-term growth strategy as demand remains strong.

The specific purchase price for the factory was not disclosed. The announcement follows a month in which Bombardier CEO Éric Martel indicated the company was beginning to consider acquisitions in aircraft services and defense, driven by increased demand for its business jets and the company's reduced debt load. The acquisition, pending regulatory approvals, is anticipated to be finalized later this year.
