Samsung may give the Galaxy S27 and S27+ a long-overdue zoom upgrade

The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra may trade its current 5x optical zoom telephoto camera for a larger 4x sensor, according to a new leak. This change would represent a significant shift from the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which features a 50MP 5x telephoto camera with a smaller 1/2.5-inch sensor. While a lower optical zoom may seem like a step back, the larger sensor could lead to improved image quality.

Bigger sensors can gather more light, which can result in better detail, reduced noise, and cleaner telephoto shots in challenging lighting conditions. Additionally, a larger sensor may provide Samsung with more data to work with when digitally extending beyond the native 4x zoom range. However, the final decision will depend on whether the benefits of the larger sensor outweigh the costs, as Samsung is reportedly evaluating the trade-off against its bill of materials.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra may ultimately retain the 5x telephoto camera if the improvements are not deemed substantial enough.
