Pentagon brings on Grok and ChatGPT for military use

The Pentagon has introduced tailored versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok, providing 3 million civilian and military personnel access to AI tools designed specifically for "warfighter needs." These custom versions, ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, are now available on GenAI.mil, a secure portal launched last year. GenAI.mil, which initially offered Google Gemini, is intended to give Department of Defense employees access to cutting-edge AI models without exposing sensitive government data to consumer channels.

The portal has already attracted over 1.7 million unique users from the department's 3 million personnel.

These new AI tools are part of the Pentagon's broader strategy to harness AI to boost productivity and provide a competitive edge while maintaining security. The Pentagon has deliberately avoided working with Anthropic's Claude model due to a dispute over the company's refusal to grant unrestricted access to its tools, despite insisting on specific safety measures. Instead, the Pentagon is partnering with other companies, such as Starshield AI, to develop its AI capabilities.

ChatGPT Mil, emerging from OpenAI for Government, offers a familiar experience to commercial ChatGPT users, focusing on chat, files, projects, and custom GPTs. It will assist with document-heavy, routine unclassified tasks like administrative work, logistics, planning, and policy. More features will be added over time. Grok, on the other hand, is positioned by the Pentagon with broader and more militaristic potential.

"Starshield AI's Grok for Government will provide the warfighter with immediate productivity gains, stronger knowledge continuity and more secure and efficient collaboration," the department stated. Grok's capabilities could enable military personnel to execute missions faster and with greater precision across various operational contexts, from market research analysis for acquisition professionals to supply chain management for logisticians.
