Pentagon Now Has Custom Military Versions of ChatGPT and Grok

The Pentagon has launched military-focused versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok, granting approximately 3 million civilian and military personnel access to generative AI tools tailored for defense-related tasks. These custom versions are accessible through GenAI.mil, the Department of Defense's centralized secure platform for commercial AI models, which was launched last year with Google Gemini's inclusion.

The military iterations are distinct from consumer versions as they do not involve data collection practices typically linked with consumer technology products. Over 1.7 million users, out of the 3 million personnel, have already taken advantage of GenAI.mil. The Pentagon's move aims to enhance productivity through advanced AI tools while ensuring government data remains within secure environments.

Currently, Grok focuses on broader military applications, such as improving productivity, preserving institutional knowledge, and facilitating secure collaboration. Potential uses include market research for acquisition teams and supply-chain management for logistics personnel. The Defense Department is also collaborating with other tech companies, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, to expand artificial intelligence applications across defense operations.
