Instagram Looks to Limit AI-Created Accounts Posing as Human

Instagram is addressing user concerns over AI-generated profiles that appear human by announcing changes to its platform. The social media giant, owned by Meta, has decided to rename its AI creator label to "AI-generated profile" to make it more conspicuous for users. This move is part of Instagram's efforts to ensure transparency regarding AI-generated personas on its platform.

Additionally, the platform is planning to limit the visibility of AI-generated profiles that do not display the new label. Instagram's blog post clarifies that creators who have already labeled their profiles as AI-generated will receive an update and have the opportunity to review and confirm if the label is still applicable or to remove it if necessary.

Creators who use AI tools in a non-compensatory manner for their creative processes are exempt from adding the label. This development comes amidst growing public criticism of AI-generated profiles, which have sparked concerns about deception and potential misuse of the technology. The Senate Judiciary Committee recently approved legislation, the NO FAKES Act, aiming to safeguard individuals' voices and likenesses against unauthorized AI replication.

This bill underscores the increasing threat AI poses to personal identity and privacy, extending beyond social media to financial fraud and online impersonation.
